Projectx maps in the wild!

Saturday, January 21st, 2006

One of our first customers has put his own mapping interface online using Zoomin Maps.

Nz Flats allows you to view your search results in either a standard text based search – or with each point plotted on our maps embedded in their site.

It’s nice to see our maps out there getting used – 3 months from hand hitting keyboard to our first customer out there for real.

We’ve received a mountain of feedback over the last couple of months. Here’s a selection of our favourite feedback:

Overall a really excellent site … can’t believe it is free!!! – Ian

Great site to search for locations! I like it simple and fast. You guys
did a fantastic job – Alex

Awesome! Exactly what I was looking for and you save me a whole lot of
time and energy < Thanx – Jai

What an amazing site! I work in sales and most of our meetings are
onsite with the customer. This allows me to pinpoint the exact address
before I go out! – Dominic

I am loving the website it shows everything so clearly and has helped me a lot!! Well done everyone who helped in it 🙂 – Ben

Just found your site in NetGuide magazine and have been on a little “Tiki
Tour”. Wow, beats taking clumsy maps on a trip, It’s the poor man’s
Navman. Will tell all my friends, wish you all the best. – Kevin

Just tried searching for a few addresses. All showed with with minimal
effort, and with maximum info. Really cool. I quite like the way one can
browse right down to to house numbers… also the search that narrorws
down options in realtime on the home page. Keep it up. I’m going to
recommend the site to quite a few friends. – Indy

This is the most freaking amazing cool site i’ve ever had the pleasure to
find information easily on. You guys rock! Have forwarded it to all my
mates too – thanks heaps! I have such a tragic sense of direction, i’m
sure you’ve added hours onto my life – that is, time i won’t be making
wrong turns down dead ends and wrong streets. – Kylie

Thanks for all the encouragement. Keep the feedback coming, we are working hard at adding your suggestions to our site.

Access problems for Telstra / Paradise users

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005

We have received feedback from our users saying that they can’t access the ZoomIn site over the last couple of days. We have traced the problem to a subset of our customers that are using Telstra Clear or Paradise as their ISP.

We have spoken with Telstra Clear and they informed us that they are having problems with their DNS servers. Check out Telstra Clear’s Network Status page

The message on the Telstra site states:

Some business and residential customers on dialup and high speed internet(ADSL) will be experiencing
authentication and browsing issues. We apologise for the inconvenience.

Hopefully, they will resolve the problem quickly, so you can access the ZoomIn site.

Wow! What a week.

Friday, November 18th, 2005

We have had a great week here at Projectx. The ZoomIn site was profiled in the Dominion Post’s Info on Monday and we have had a tidal wave of interest.

A big thank you to everyone who has sent in feedback. We really appreciate all of your suggestions and support. We are in the process of responding to all of your feedback. Please bear with us until we answer your queries.

The long tail emerges…

Monday, November 14th, 2005

I had at look the Zoomin stats on the weekend. I noticed something really interesting about our some of the hits that resulted from users search engine requests.

20% of searches coming from Google were users looking for maps of one of the main centres in NZ. ie. Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin or Hamilton.

And a whopping 80% of the Google searches on the site were users looking for small towns or exact addresses. eg. Hokitika, loft place kumeu, or Tyne Street Invercargill.

This is an example of the Long tail in action. (The “Long tail” is a concept that descibes the value of catering to niche markets.) This reinforces the value of Zoomin to users by providing street addresses for the entire country. I believe that the long tail phenomenon will become more prominent as the search engines index our site right down to street address level. ie. 25 Marion Street Wellington

"Start-up intent on mapping our future."

Monday, November 14th, 2005

Zoomin has been profiled in this mornings Dominion Post’s InfoTech section. (Dominion post is Wellington’s daily newspaper)

Our story “Start-up intent on mapping our future” was one of the lead stories for this week edition.

Thanks to Tom Pullar-Strecker and the Dominion Post for the article.

Autocompletion

Monday, October 31st, 2005

At Zoomin, we’re using some ajax autocompletion when people enter their search terms.

One of the biggest benefits we’ve found so far is that autocompletion reduces the number of misspelled streets – because as people start to type the name of the street they’re looking for – the street appears below. It also helps if you don’t know if it’s featherston street or featherston road.
