Bus Theory…

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

For the longest time, I’ve been using the concept of “Bus Theory” when talking to our team. ie. ‘What happens if someone gets run over by a bus’. It’s suppose to make you think about contingency plans and all that stuff.

Unfortunately on the weekend, one of my friends was hit by a bus while he was putting his young son into his car seat. Thankfully, he has been able to walk away with only  multiple fractures in his arm. Thankfully, his young son was completely unharmed.

Its humbling to when you think about the whole thing. Its a timely reminder that sometimes we take things for granted and that our relationships with our friends and family are what really matters.

Halfbaked Challenge – Code Blacks vs Silicon Welly All-Stars

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

I’m part of the Silicon All-Stars team in the webstock halfbaked challenge

ciprofloxacin hci

Its seems like a bit of a no contest… a bunch of industry professionals (Code Blacks) vs a group of battle hardened entrepreneurs (Silicon Welly All-Stars). The excuses are already starting to flow..

The CodeBlacks have been hit with injuries and players signing to overseas leagues for exorbitant sums. In fact the team is down to only three original CodeBlacks…

OK, full credit to the code blacks, they did build a website in 24 hours, but you’re talking to seasoned entrepreneurs and our businesses crank out new products, websites and business ideas every other week!.

The Silicon Welly All-Stars have strong history, we’ve raised more money, won more awards, launched more products, released more code, marketed more ideas, hired more people!

And we have our secret weapon team captain Tim Norton – the fast mouth in the south. 5 minutes to pitch a new business, he’s already demo’d PlanHQ to world in 6 minutes.

Mapping and Spatial RSS feed aggregator in NZ

Monday, April 21st, 2008

I’ve decided to create a RSS (Blog) feed to aggregate all of the RSS from all of the NZ mapping and spatial companies. I thought it would a great idea to promote a single RSS feed to the industry to promote ideas, products etc.

cipro xr brand

After a quick look at some of the top players in the space, very few have RSS feeds. (Which is very disappointing!)
If you know of a blog that should be on this list either email me john at projectx.co.nz or add it on the wiki page I have created at barcamp wiki.

Upgraded to WordPress 2.5

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Just upgraded our ProjectX blog to wordpress 2.5. It was amazing easy to upgrade and instructions are really comprehensive. So far, I really like the backend . They have really improved the whole interface. Most actions that I want to do are now within the first screen roll.

Nice work to the WordPress team.

Foo baa'd

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Well, I’m a bit late to the party in terms of writing about Foo Camp that’s because I was pretty knackered to start with. So I thought I’d just write about my personal highlights:

(Note to self. Don’t pack in 5 meetings in one day before foo camp, and thus lose your voice !)

  • Great to catch up lots of people from all around NZ, Ben and Nick, Tasha, Glenn, Robert and Robert
  • Seminars were great, but discussions outside were much better.
  • Debating the merits of Internships (Summer of Code) with a selection of academic and industry people.
  • The Torkingtons’ jammin’ out some catchy tunes on the double bass, guitar and banjo.
  • Seeing niche discussion groups spring up and thrash out ideas.
  • Watching Toby hacked up a object tracking system with a webcam within a couple of hours.
  • Having a play with a Meraki device
  • Eating the best conference food for many a year

And finally a big thanks to Vern, Russell, Nat and Jenine for putting it all together. You guys are awesome!

Right brain vs left brain

Sunday, November 11th, 2007

Here’s a simple test to see if you use more of your right brain than your left brain….

It’s a little freaky when it changes direction!

FYI: How to fix a invisible folders on Windows USB disk, but visible on Mac OSX

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Here’s a fix to a problem I had with a using an usb drive on both Mac and Windows.

Problem: A directory of files was missing from a USB drive. (NTFS formatted USB drive). But, when I browsed the disk on Mac, the directory and files were visible.

Looking at the disk properties (ie. disk space used on the drive), it showed that the files were still there. It was really strange, and a lot of googling couldn’t find the answer.

Solution: Use the dos command chkdsk -f to fix the errors on the disk. The USB disk must have got corrupted when switch between machines.

Thanks to Milton for suggesting the fix. The problem was exsaserbated because it happen which I was migrating from Windows to Mac. 🙂
